Representation of our identity can be interpreted differently from person to person. However, it is up to only ourselves to explore how to represent the identity we wish to portray. It is what we do in our life that gives us the understanding of how to define who we are.
G. McGarvie’s photographic interest accumulates both identity and trace. His practice intends to communicate how an identity’s representation is reliant on a personal history/ journey, a trace. Untitled captures the identity of 1 subject whom he considers to know well. It is of vital importance that McGarvie knows of his subject well, as this helps to form the concept of the work. Taken, is a stereotypically portrait-styled image of the subject to avoid any level of ambiguity, hereafter removing this representation of identity, via intentional subtle means, to communicate the importance of individual personal history that form characteristics that make up who you are.
